U.S. Middle East envoy Dennis Ross told Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat that the United States opposes Arafat’s threat to unilaterally declare statehood after May 4, the end of the interim peace period established by the Oslo accords. Ross made his comment in Madrid on Tuesday, where the two met to discuss Palestinian statehood. President Clinton is scheduled to meet with Arafat on Tuesday at the White House.
