Three Congressional representatives from Maryland who identify themselves with the declaration of policy adopted this month in Washington by the conference of leading Jewish organizations, today sent a copy of the declaration to Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and urged him to take action to allay widespread public concern over the current developments in the Middle East.
In the letter to Mr. Dulles, George H. Fallon. Samuel E. Friedel, and Edward A. Garmatz, all democrats from Maryland, said that the United States was pursuing an unbalanced policy in the Middle East. “We are giving arms to the Arab states and not to Israel in advance of a peace settlement and we are promoting a system of defense alliances which welcomes the participation of the Arabs and which does not include Israel,” the three members of the House of Representatives said.
“If the Arab states,” the Congressmen continued, “are to be strengthened and Israel is to be relatively weakened–a policy we cannot understand or support–it seems to us that the least we can do is to give Israel some guarantee that the balance of strength in the area will not be upset and that we will safeguard Israel’s territorial integrity. We are opposed to giving arms to any of the Arab states without a requirement that they end their war against Israel.”
