The U.S. Government has asked the Egyptian Government to investigate “the reported dereliction” of the Egyptian police force in falling to intervene promptly and effectively in the incident that cost the life of Stephen Haas, prominent Jewish leader of Philadelphia. The Egyptian Government has also been asked to explain why Mrs. Haas, his widow, was prevented from communicating immediately with the American Embassy in Cairo.
Haas was stoned to death in a riot in Cairo on July 18, The American charge d’affaires in Cairo, Jefferson Patterson, made strong representations to the Egyptian Prime Minister Nokrashy Pasha who assured Patterson that the persons guilty of Haas’ death would be apprehended and punished. The U.S. Government then sent a note, the contents of which were made public today, to the Egyptian Government expressing its grave concern over “this most serious incident.”
