Emphasizing that he speaks in the name of ” tens of thousands of Jewish workers and soldiers who are members of the Mapam Party” of Israel, Dr. Moshe Sneh, former head of the Haganah, told a mass meeting here tonight that official American policy on Palestine “is provoking bitter disappointment” in Israel.
Dr. Sneh denied that the Mapam movement is orientated towards the East and is against the West. “We do not recognize any split of the world into East and West,” he said. “Our orientation is toward the progressive forces in all parts of the world without distinction, and we also believe in the progressive tendencies and in the honestly democratic traditions of the great American nation.”
The leader of the Mapam then called upon the United States to reject the Bernadotte recommendations on Palestine and to lend its full. support towards the realization of the U.N. partition decision. He said that Israel wants a speedy and Just peace and is ready to cooperate with a democratic independent Arab state, providing that the state is not ruled by the ex-Mufti or by “the British marionette King Abdullah,” but by “peaceful Arab elements who stretch their hands out to us for peace.”
