U.S. Prosecutor Thomas Dodd today produced an affidavit by Emil Puhl, right-hand man at the Reichsbank of Dr. Walther Funk, former head of the institution, declaring that Funk cooperated closely with the S.S. and the Nazi Ministry of Finance in arranging for the deposit at the Reichsbank of gold and jewelry stolen from Jews, or stripped from them when they were executed in concentration camps.
Publ said that Funk had told him that he had arranged with Gestapo chief Heinrich Himmler to receive in the bank’s safe deposit vaults gold, jewels and other valuables seized by the S.S., including watches, gold spectacle frames and dentures. Funk’s claim that he was not aware that the bank carried on such activities was disputed by the prosecution which presented a film taken immediately after the bank’s capture which showed huge piles of such objects.
