Publishers of history textbooks widely used in American schools today rejected charges by the Association of Teachers of Social Studies, who have contended that the books have given “inadequate treatment” to Nazi genocide practices.
The association issued a report last week, based on a three-month study, in which the publishers were accused of “pussyfooting” and “sugar-coating” the history of Nazi atrocities against Jews and other minority groups. The teachers called for revision of the textbooks.
A number of publishers said that they do not feel they are “pussyfooting.” They claimed that there is no need to revise their textbooks, and that “within the context of world history, the Nazi period has been adequately covered.”
