U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself, but said Israeli incursions into the West Bank and the policy of targeted assassinations were counterproductive to political solutions for ending violence in the Middle East. Speaking before the House International Relations Committee, Powell was questioned repeatedly about issues related to Israel, including whether groups like Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad would be targeted by the U.S.-led international coalition against terrorism.
