American, Soviet and British servicemen were among the throngs that filled the big Sephardic and Ashkenazic synagogues here to attend Rosh Hashonah services. Both synagogues were damaged during Allied bombardments of this capital, but they were repaired in time for the services.

Many of the Jewish soldiers attached to the Allied missions here dined and wined in the homes of local Jews. Unfortunately, the major part of the Jewish population could not truly enjoy the holiday as they have not yet recovered from the devastation wrought by the fascists and are without most necessities.

Pointing out that these were the first free services to be held in Bulgaria in five years, rabbis appealed for unity among the Jewish people in order that a better future and “national salvation” may be secured.
