Two Los Angeles surgeons, Dr. M. Shapiro and Dr. J. Kay, performed seven open-heart operations successfully at Hebrew University–Hadassah Hospital here, it was revealed today.
The announcement of the success of the American team was made just before Drs. Shapiro and Kay took their leave, to go home. They have been at work here, using equipment donated by a third Los Angeles physician, Dr. M. Bernstein. While performing operations, the Americans also taught Israeli surgeons the new, difficult techniques involved in open-heart surgery.
