The State Department declared today there is “no intention” on the part of this government to support any change in the wording” of Security Council Resolution 242. Charles Bray, a Department spokesman, made the statement after he was asked at the Department’s daily briefing whether the United States policy continues to be to resist and, if necessary, veto any effort to change the wording of the resolution. The question was based on a report that anti-Israel representatives at the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly session may attempt to modify the resolution which would insist that Israel withdraw from “every inch” of territory occupied as a result of the Six-Day War.
