Six hundred U.S. Constabulary troopers today raided the Lampertheim Camp for displaced Jews, near Heidelberg, in what was described as a routine search for black market activity. The raid went off without any incidents, and it was learned unofficially that the search was “disappointing.”
Twelve hundred Jewish DP’s demonstrated peacefully yesterday before the British consulate in Frankfurt to protest the execution of members of the Jewish underground in Palestine and to demand free immigration to the Holy Land.
Lessing J. Rosenwald, president of the American Council for Judaism, who is touring the American zones in Germany and Austria with a group of U.S. business men, said tonight that the only solution to the DP problem was to liquidate the camps and permit the residents to emigrate to where they wished. “That means the United States and other lands, including Palestine, Canada, Australia and many others which must be opened,” Mr. Rosenwald declared.
He told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he had visited many of the DP camps because he was interested in the problem and is active in the Citizens Committee on Displaced Persons, which is headed by Earl G. Harrison, former U.S. Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization. Mr. Rosenwald praised the spirit of the displaced Jews, saying they were doing everything possible with the limited facilities at their disposal.
