The possibility of an Israel-American pact, provided peace prevails in the Middle East, was held out here today by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, at a press conference.
Describing the political situation in the United States, Dr. Goldmann asserted that there is now a greater understanding of Israel’s problems and there might be a readiness to discuss such a pact, but that this was a slow process which might take many months to realize. He underlined that such a possibility could only exist if peace prevailed in the region.
Israel is no longer isolated and its friends in the United States are endeavoring to promote better understanding of its problems, but that, he stressed, depends on how Israel acts.
The Arabs, he reported, recently established a powerful propaganda center in the United States, using topflight newspapermen, radio and television figures to promote their line. The Arab budget for this work is greater than the combined Agency and Israel Government public relations budgets, he said. Israel must take full cognizance of this new development, he warned.
Referring to the situation in the communities in the United States; Dr. Goldmann praised Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, new head of the Israel bond drive, and added that now that peace prevails between the bond drive and the United Jewish Appeal and because of the improved economic situation in the U.S., income for Israel will rise by at least ten percent.
