Congressman Emanuel Celler of New York called on the Administration here last night to redeem a pre-election pledge made by President Kennedy to use American influence to end Egypt’s Suez Canal ban against Israeli shipping and ships of other nations bound for Israel.
In an address to the annual dinner of the Women’s Social Service for Israel, Inc., the veteran Democratic lawmaker asked also that the U. S. cease negotiations with Nasser for the sending of American surplus cotton to Egypt. Mr. Celler charged that the Egyptians would use U.S.cotton “in exchange for Soviet weapons” from Russia and her satellites.
Mr. Celler said that during the past fiscal year the United States has given Egypt “more than $100, 000, 000 in aid” but despite this, “our compensation is abrasive accusations and insults from Nasser.”
