The United States last Friday night vetoed in the Security Council a Lebanese-sponsored resolution “deploring” Israel for “violence” in south Lebanon and demanding that Israel withdraw its military forces “to the internationally recognized boundaries of Lebanon.” Eleven members of the 15-member Council supported the resolution while three countries, Australia, Britain and Denmark, abstained. The U.S. was the only country that opposed the resolution. It traditionally vetoes anti-Israeli resolutions as unbalanced and one-sided.
