A project to establish a “memorial forest” in honor of American volunteers–both Jews and non-Jews–who fell in Israel’s war of liberation was launched here today by the American Veterans of Israel, a fraternal organization of Americans who served in the Israel campaign, including those who manned the “illegal” immigration ships during the Mandatory period.
The project was announced today at a meeting at the Statler Hotel sponsored jointly by the Jewish National Fund and the American Veterans of Israel. It was reported at the meeting that about 50 Americans had died in action in Israel and that no monument has as yet been set up in their memory. It was decided at the meeting to plant 10, 000 trees in their honor in the rocky hills of Judea.
