U.S. voters rejected school voucher initiatives in Michigan and California. In Michigan, the initiative would have provided $3,300 “opportunity scholarships” to students in failing public schools. The California initiative, which would have created the most sweeping voucher program in the nation, would have provided a $4,000 voucher to any student in kindergarten through 12th grade wishing to attend a private school. Jewish groups have been sharply divided over the voucher issue.
