U.S. WARNS ISRAEL AND JORDAN; ANXIETY EXPRESSED IN WASHINGTON
State Department sources today said that the flare-up in Jerusalem is causing anxiety in Washington and is increasing the determination of the United States Government to resolve the Arab-Israel problem and to strengthen the Middle East against Communism.
In a special statement, the State Department said the United States “deplores” the Jerusalem outbreak and “earnestly hopes” Jordan and Israel will “cooperate whole-heartedly with Gen. Vagn Bennike, chief of staff of the United Nations truce supervision organization, in his efforts to terminate this serious clash. “
The Department said identical messages were dispatched to Jordan and Israel urging those governments to take “immediate steps to insure the observance of the ceasefire.”
