The United States will formally recognize the new Iraqi Government, the State Department announced today, three days after the overthrow of the Kassem regime. The Department said that U. S. Charge d’Affaires in Baghdad Roy Melbourne has been instructed to notify the new government of the decision in writing.
With the recognition went this government’s “best wishes for success and prosperity” and the hope “for expanded and strengthened ties” between the U.S. and Iraq. The Department announcement said it has been assured by the leaders of the new regime that all international obligations would be honored which is regarded as a major condition of such recognition.
