Voting against all Jewish candidates who ran for election to the local Soviet was the punishment of the Ukrainian population in Winnice, Ukraine, for the demand of the Jewish voters that an official pronouncement be read in Yiddish.
During the election the Jewish voters demanded that the Nakaz be read, besides in the Russian and Ukrainian languages, also in Yiddish. The Ukrainian electors protested against this suggestion and created a tumult. The Jewish voters resented the attitude of the Ukrainians. Following tumultuous scenes which lasted several hours, the Nakaz was read also in Yiddish, but the Ukrainians cast their votes against the Jewish candidates.
