First steps toward splitting the Jewish community in Jerusalem due to the controversy between the ultra-Orthodox and the Zionists were taken at a meeting of representatives of ultra-Orthodox groups held here yesterday.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Kolelim, the organizations raising funds in the Diaspora for the maintenance of the Chalukah institutions, several Orthodox institutions and rabbis under the leadership of Rabbi Sonnenfeld.
The meeting decided to form a separate congregation in accordance with the provisions of the recently promulgated Palestine Communities Ordinance which, although it establishes the principle of one Jewish community in each locality, allows the creation of separate congregations of dissenters.
