The Security Council voted last night 12-0 to extend the mandate of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in the Sinai for another nine months. Two members of the 15-member Council — the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia — abstained. China did not participate in the vote.
The Council’s decision to extend the mandate for nine months was a compromise between the 12-month extension requested by Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and the six months proposed by the Soviet Union. The UNEF’s present mandate expires tonight.
Meanwhile, it was learned here today that the General Assembly’s main political committee will probably vote next week on an Iraqi-inspired draft resolution calling on the Security Council to impose an arms embargo on Israel. Some 35 Arab and Third World countries, including Egypt, are sponsoring this resolution, which, according to diplomats, will be adopted by the committee and later endorsed by the General Assembly.
