The Security Council resumed debate today on the report of the 20-member Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The Council met for about two hours and adjourned until tomorrow morning. Speakers today included Jordan. Turkey, Bahrein, Hungary and Afghanistan.
The debate began two weeks ago but was suspended while the Council took up urgent matters relating to Cyprus and Angola. It is expected to be protracted because 60 member states have registered to speak so far. Israel has refused to recognize the committee and is boycotting the sessions. Sixteen of the member states of the committee have no diplomatic relations with Israel.
The committee’s report calls for Israel’s withdrawal to its pre-June 1967 borders according to a pre-arranged time-table and preparations for the establishment of a Palestinian state. A diplomatic source here told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that the U.S. is expected to veto the report when it comes up for a vote and that the Western European nations would probably abstain.
