A United Nations spokesman made it clear today that there is no present intention of having Ambassador Gunnar V. Jarring return to the Middle East to resume his peace-seeking mission. The United Nations special envoy will arrive here Tuesday to consult with Secretary-General U Thant on the status of his mission and its prospects. The length of his stay here will be determined by Dr. Jarring himself, the UN spokesman declared. Asked whether Dr. Jarring would resume his mission, the UN spokesman replied, “yes. In New York.” His answer gave rise to belief among some correspondents that Dr. Jarring would resume contacts with Israel and the Arab states through their missions here.
The UN spokesman also made public Mr. Thant’s response to a question previously addressed to him as to whether he had found any forward movement in the meeting of the Four Powers here last Thursday. Some reports had indicated progress had been made during the meeting, although the American delegation had indicated that the progress had been in a change of tone by the Soviets rather than in position. Mr. Thant’s reply was that there had been a slight forward movement.
