Reports received from Talmud Torahs of Jewish weekday religious schools in Greater New York and made public yesterday by Bernard Semel, honorary secretary of the Jewish Education Association indicate the fact that the number of pupils in those schools requiring free tuition has increased as a result of the prevailing unemployment by approximately 2,500. The total number of schools embraced in the reports is 282 with a register of 49,000 pupils. This increase, Mr. Semel explained, means an added communal burden of $125,000 to provide tuition for these children, the cost per annum of instructing a child in a Talmud Torah being $50.
