A special convention inaugurating Israel’s annual United Israel Appeal campaign set today a goal of 9,000,000 pounds ($3,333,333) for the drive. Almost 5,500,000 pounds ($1,833,333) was raised the previous year.
Among those attending the convention were Premier Levi Eshkol; Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of Keren Hayesod; Moshe Sharett, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, and Dr. Ernst Lehman, chairman of the Israel UIA. The speakers called for increased giving by Israelis to make the partnership of Jews within and outside of Israel fuller in assuming the financial burdens of absorbing immigrants and strengthening the state.
Premier Eshkol reminded the audience that by 1970, Israel will have 3,000,000 inhabitants. Dr. Goldstein said that there were still 30,000 newcomers still living in slum flats. Mr. Sharett called on Israelis to intensify contributions as one means of spurring Jews in other communities to increase their efforts as well.
