The statement issued yesterday by Ambassador Abba Eban of Israel declaring that “any purchase of Israel bands at the expense of a contribution to the United Jewish Appeal is not a service to Israel” was lauded today by Monroe Goldwater, president of the U.J.A. of Greater New York.
Mr. Goldwater pointed out that “Ambassador Eban’s statement is in accord with the position taken by 1,200 representatives of American Jewry at the National Planning Conference for Israel and Jewish Rehabilitation in Washington, October 26-29, 1950.” The Conference stated that it was “fully appreciative of the primary role which the United Jewish Appeal will play in the total three-year program for $1,000,000,000,” to be raised in this country for Israel.
Mr. Goldwater emphasized that $182,000,000 of the $203,684,577 budgetary requirements of the agencies constituting the national United Jewish Appeal is scheduled for expenditure in Israel this year by the United Palestine Appeal and the Joint Distribution Committee.
