The United Jewish Appeal, in the first six months of this year, raised $11,500,000 of its $25,000,000 1943 quota, it was reported today at a meeting of the executive committee which was convened to review the results of Spring campaigns in 3,095 communities.
Expressing satisfaction with the rise in the level of giving in all parts of the country in the current year, the executive committee nevertheless pointed out that in order to meet vital needs for overseas war relief and rehabilitation, for the maintenance of the wartime program in the Jewish National Home in Palestine and for the adjustment of refugees in the United States to the war effort, American Jewry must provide an additional sum of $13,500,000 during the balance of this year.
The statement of the executive committee called attention to new developments which have enlarged the scope of the activities of the Joint Distribution Committee, United Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service. Among these it cited (1) the liberation of North Africa; (2) the large-scale enterprise for the emigration of 29,000 refugee children to Palestine and the transportation of thousands of others to the Western Hemisphere; (3) the shortage of war manpower which requires the speedy integration of refugees in American war industries. How widespread has been American Jewry’s interest in and support of the U.J.A., was indicated in the fact that 3,095 communities took part in the Spring drive this year as compared with 2,520 communities for the same period in 1942.
