More than half of the $32,000,000 quota of the nation-wide campaign for world-wide rescue and rehabilitation carried on by the United Jewish Appeal was raised in the first five months of 1944 by 3,250 Jewish communities throughout the country, it was reported yesterday following a meeting of the executive committee of the United Jewish Appeal at the Biltmore Hotel.

Asserting that the Jews of the United States have responded generously to the United Jewish Appeal at a time when its agencies were confronted with critical needs resulting from the tightening of the grip of Nazi control in the Balkans, a statement issued by the executive committee stressed the fact that even greater needs would face the United Jewish Appeal in the immediate future.

It was reported at the executive meeting that the agencies constituting the United Jewish Appeal have been cooperating closely with the governmental and intergovernmental bodies concerned with the refugee problem. The opening up of channels of escape through the intervention of the President’s War Refugee Board has helped to increase the flow of emigration from Europe to Palestine and the Western Hemisphere, the executive committee said. Through the combined rescue operations of the Joint Distribution Committee and the United Palestine Appeal, 8,500 refugees from the Balkars, North Africa, Spain and Portugal have been brought to Palestine since the beginning of the year.
