United Jewish Campaign in New York Passes Its Half-way Mark

Shuberts Donate $50,000; Samuel Untermyer Gives $30,000

A contribution of $50,000 from Sam S. and Lee Shubert marked the first rally of the Theatrical Division of the United Jewish Campaign, held at the Hotel Biltmore, Tuesday. Every branch of the theatrical profession and its allied industries were represented at the meeting, which was presided over by Joe Leblang. Those who participated in the meeting and pledged their active cooperation in the $6,000,000 drive were:

Cohen, representing Theatrical Owners; Jacob Wilk, Motion Picture Theater Brokers; Leo Brecher, Motion Picture Theater Owners; Alexander Rempner, Theatrical Real Estate Men; Charles Rosenzweig, F. B. O.; Ben Bernie, Sam Franko, Herman Bernie, Theatrical Orchestras; Harry B. Nelmes, President of the Treasurer’s Club of America; Walter J. Moore, Theatrical Lithographers; M. L. Simmons, Exhibitors Daily Review; Samuel Abraham, representing the “Bohemians”; Edward Goodman, representing “The Stagers”; Harry H. Buxbaum, Fox Film Corporation; M. S. Epstein, Cosmopolitan Studio; Douglas Taussig, Fox Film Corporation; Charles A. Levy, Broadway Theater Ticket Company; Charles S. Levine, Fox Circuit.

Molly Picon represented the Yiddish Theater Group. Performers were represented by Eddie Buzzel. Others present were Beulah Livingstone, Scenario Editor for Schenck Productions; Martha L. Wilchinski, Publicity Director of Capitol Theater, Jack G. Leo and Dr. Iago Galdston.

The gathering was addressed by David M. Bressler, vice-chairman of the United Jewish Campaign of New York, David A. Brown, national chairman, and Louis Marshall.

Mr. Leblang announced that meetings in the interest of the campaign were being called by “The Friars,” the Theatrical Treasurers Club of America, and the Motion Picture Owners Association and that similar action is expected by The Lambs, and the Green Room Club.

The officers of the Theatrical Division are: E. F. Albee, William A. Brady, Eddie Cantor, Sidney S. Cohen, A. L. Erboger, Morris Goodman, Sam H. Harris, Al Jolson, Carl Laemmle, Joseph Leblang, Marcus Loew, William Morris. B. S. Moss, Charles O’Reilly, Lee Shubert, Douglas N. Taussing, Harry Warner, Jacob Wilk and Adolph Zukor, all acting as co-chairmen.

Announcement was made by David M. Bressler, vice-chairman in charge of the campaign that Samuel Untermyer lad contributed $30,000.

The fast rally of workers held Tuesday at the Hotel Biltmore added $324,230 to the fund. Of this sum Far Rockerty contributed $128,000 which was raised at a dinner Monday night. The Women’s Division added $24,000 to their fund bringing their total up to $2?6,000 The total thus far raised as rejected by David M. Bressler, vice-chairman in charge of the drive, is $3.155.

Among the large contributions announced at the rally were $10,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Jerome J. Hanauer; $15,000 from Max D. Stener; $15,000 from Mr. Nathan J. Miller; $7,500 from Eli Winkler; $6,000 from David A Ansbacher; $1,000 from Mrs. Carl Pforzheimer, $1,165 from the Women’s Town Club through Mrs. Ernest Grunsfeld.

David M. Bressler who presided at the rally announced a contribution of $152,25 from the children of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society of New York.
