United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s office has adopted a “wait-and-see” attitude toward the announced federation of Egypt and Syria, it was learned here today.

Contrary to reports, the highest level in the United Nations has made no statement about the meaning of the federation and its relations to the UN and is not going to issue any such statement until there is a constitution, single flag and general set-up for the new “United Arab Republic,” it was established.

There is no indication here yet whether the new Arab state will attempt to retain both UN votes now held by Egypt and Syria through the adoption of a commonwealth arrangement rather than single nation status.

Top officialdom at the UN believes a long time will elapse before there is a union between the two states in fact as well as in law. There is also a belief here that no aspect of UN relations with the new state will come up at least until the next General Assembly.
