The U.N. General Assembly was called upon today to “adopt a bill of rights guaranteeing equality before the law, cultural autonomy, religious freedom and the right to emigrate to wherever they choose” to the Jews in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, former Italian colonies whose disposition the assembly is now considering.
A memorandum submitted to Assembly president Herbert Evatt by the World Jewish Congress, pointed out that “far from improving, the plight of the Jews deteriorated even further since the occupation of these territories by Allied authorities at the end of World War II.” The memorandum also noted that 7,500 of the 22,000 Jews in Tripoli are dependent on the Jewish community for their sustenance.
