The charges and counter-charges filed by Israel, Jordan and Egypt with the United Nations Security Council are evidence of unsatisfactory relations between the Jewish state and its most powerful neighbors and point up the fact that the Council must put in a good deal of work before relations improve, the London Times declared today in an editorial commenting on the strained situation in the Middle East.
The Times asserted that the Arab states are attempting to get Israel convicted of defying the U.N. on the Jerusalem and refugee issues while Israel is becoming impatient with the Arab attitude which is forcing the Jews to maintain a “crippling defense budget.” It adds that both the Jews and Arabs know that neither the U.N. nor the Big Three–U.S., Britain and France–who have guaranteed the present borders of the states involved will permit the renewal of warfare.
