Gunnar Jarring, the Swedish diplomat appointed by Secretary-General Thant as the United Nations special representative to the Middle East, arrived in New York today and was scheduled to hold the first of what may be a series of “briefing” meetings with Mr. Thant tomorrow, a U.N. spokesman declared today.
Mr. Jarring has been named in accordance with a resolution adopted unanimously last week by the Security Council, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining contact with Israel and the Arab states “in order to promote agreement and assist efforts to achieve a peaceful and accepted settlement” of the Mideast crisis as provided for in the Council’s resolution.
Israel’s chief envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Gideon Rafael, is scheduled to meet with Mr. Jarring Tuesday. Mr. Rafael was to have left for Israel today, having completed his tour of duty here, but was reportedly asked by Mr. Thant to delay his departure so that he might meet with the new Mideast emissary.
Mr. Thant, when informing the parties on the appointment of the Swedish diplomat, expressed his “earnest hope and confidence that each of the governments concerned will extend to Ambassador Jarring its full cooperation and will afford him all facilities necessary for the effective discharge of the important task entrusted to him.”
