The United Nations Ad Hoc Political Committee today adopted without a dissenting vote a joint resolution setting up a reintegration fund of $30,000,000 to be utilized for projects requested by any government in the Near East for the permanent reestablishment of Palestine refugees and their removel from relief.
The resolution, introduced by France, Turkey, Britian and the United States, also provides for the appointment of a “negotiating committee” of seven or more members to sound out U.N. member governments on their willingness to contribute on a voluntary basis both to this Palestine refugee fund and to the proposed relief-and rehabilitation program for Korea.
The resolution notes that sufficient contributions to carry out the previous works and relief program in the Near East had not been forthcoming, and the negotiating committee, it is hoped, can redress that situation.
The resolution also provides for the raising of $20,000,000 for continuation of direct relief to the refugees until mid-1952. The Secretary General of the United Nations is meanwhile authorized to make available from the U.N.’s working capital fund a sum of $5,000,000 to finance beginning operations, but to be repaid by the end of 1951.
Israel has indicated that it is willing to discuss the terms of some compensation payments which would go into the reintegration fund. The vote on the resolution was 43-0, with six abstentions. Israel voted in favor. It must now be approved by a two-thirds vote of the General Assembly.
