The United Yeshivah Chest Campaign for $500,000, to cover the combined annual deficit of nine yeshivahs, Jewish parochial schools, in Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn, will be launched next Sunday, August 3, Judge Max S. Levine, of the Court of General Sessions, president of the organization, announced today. The drive will be conducted under a novel plan of Jewish fund raising activities and is aimed at obtaining a large number of smaller contributions towards the chest.
Tisha B’Ab was selected for the launching of the drive for the reason that on that day tens of thousands of Jews visit the cemeteries to pay their respects to the memory of the departed, in accordance with ancient Hebraic tradition. There are thirty-five Jewish cemeteries in New York and vicinity, and it was estimated, stated Morris Bienenstock, treasurer of the United Yeshivah Chest, that at least 100,000 Jewish men and women visit these cemeteries on the Jewish Day of Mourning.
It was further estimated that the visitors to the Jewish cemeteries on that day generously contribute for various charitable purposes considerable amounts, the total of which attains high proportions.
