University Gets Grant to Publish History of Jews in Utah and Idaho

The University of Utah announced plans here today for the publication of the first “History of the Jewish People in Utah and Idaho,” The project was made possible by a grant to the university by Myrtle H. Friedman of Hailey, Idaho, a descendant of one the earliest Jewish settlers in the region.

Juanita Brooks, author of a number of historical works, has been commissioned to write the book. She will be associated in the project with Dr. Louis C. Zucker, University of Utah professor emeritus of English, who will collaborate in the translation and research. A special advisory committee has been formed by the university to coordinate the project. The members are: Prof. Zucker; Dr. Sterling M. McMurrin, university provost; Dr. Russell A. Mortensen, university historian; and Benjamin Roe and Joseph Rosenblatt, Utah Jewish communal leaders.
