A Chair in Hebraic Studies is planned at the University of Denver in honor of Rabbi Charles E. H. Kauvar, a Hebraic scholar who served as rabbi of Beth Ha Medrosh Hagadol Synagogue here for 50 years, He created a course in rabbinic literature at the university in 1922 and taught it continuously for 41 years.
An endowment of $400,000 to support the Rabbi Charles E. Hillel Kauver Professorship of Hebraic Studies and an additional $100, 000 for library acquisitions and student fellowships will be rained by a group of Denver civic leaders, both Christian and Jewish. The funds will be sought through applications to individuals, firms and foundations. Dr. Edward Lindell, dean of the university College of Arts and Sciences, said that a leading Hebraic scholar will be sought to fill the chair. Classes are planned in theology, history, literature, biblical interpretation and the Hebrew language for the program.
