Curfews were imposed on the Israel-held section of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and in several towns on the West Bank as a result of widespread unrest yesterday and today. Rafah lies athwart the international boundary between the Gaza Strip and Sinai. The southern section of the town was handed over to Egypt yesterday as Israel completed its withdrawal from Sinai.

The divided town was the scene of violent anti-Israel demonstrations in recent weeks. They erupted anew after the Egyptians raised their flag in their sector of Rafah and continued this morning. Tubas and Kobatiya on the West Bank were placed under curfews today. In Tubas crowds attacked the local police station but were driven off by Israeli troops.

Israeli forces dispersed student demonstrators in Ramallah and El-Bireh north of Jerusalem after the students burned tires and hurled rocks at soldiers. A border police patrol was attacked with rocks in Ramallah. The attackers were driven off by shots fired into the air.
