Acting on the advice of the preliminary administration of the International Refugee Organization which takes over responsibilities for refugees and displaced persons from UNRRA on July 1, UNRRA officials have announced a 60 percent cut in wages paid DP’s for work done in Italian camps.
The announcement has given rise to dissatisfaction which may be the forerunner of serious disturbances because the refugees refuse to work without adequate pay. Apparently I.R.O. officials have laid down the principle that refugees will work in return for their food, clothing and shelter.
UNRRA also announced that commencing June 1, it will cease providing aid to DP’s living outside the camps. This policy, too, is in accord with the wishes of the I.R.O. administration.
