Continued support of the Senate and House sponsors of the Jackson/Mills-Vanik section of the Trade Reform Bill is “crucial to the ultimate passage” of the legislation affecting Soviet emigration, the Greater Washington Jewish Community Council is warning its nearly 200 member organizations. “We in the American Jewish community have an even clearer and more vital role in the next months than ever before in ensuring the success of Soviet Jewry’s struggle for freedom,” the Council said.

It urged every organization and its membership to communicate to President Ford. Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D. Wash.) and to their Senators and Representatives that they support their efforts on behalf of Soviet Jewry. In addition, the Council urged “an all-out effort to assist in every-possible way the 38 Soviet Jewish “Prisoners of Conscience” and to participate regularly in the vigil held daily at noon opposite the Soviet Embassy to demonstrate “constant vigilance” on Soviet behavior toward Jews.
