Active support of the administration bill to guard against separation of families and to provide for legalizing residence in the United States by certain classes of aliens was urged yesterday by Miss Cecilia Razovsky of the National Council of Jewish Women, in a message to the 40,000 members of the council throughout the country. The bill, H. R. 6795, creates more stringent regulations for the deportation of criminal aliens, but guards against the separation from their families of aliens of the non-criminal class. It also gives the Secretary of Labor greater discretion in handling cases of the latter type.
A resolution favoring such legislation was recently passed by the National Council at its triennial convention in New Orleans. The Kerr Bill is an administration measure and is based on research by the Ellis Island Committee appointed by the Secretary of Labor last year and by the Immigration Service. Miss Razovsky was chairman of the consultants to the committee. Hearings on the bill will be held in Washington next week.
