An appeal to the Hungarian government to continue the state support for religious and cultural work of the Jewish communities was made today by Baron Kohner, at a general meeting of the Budapest Jewish community. Baron Kohner thanked Count Apponyi, former minister of education, for his protest to the League of Nations regarding the Palestine disturbances.
In his appeal Baron Kohner asked that the state’s support be in proportion to the number of Jews because the religious communities in various places were on the verge of collapse although the community taxes had already reached one hundred percent of the state taxes. His appeal concerns the intention of the minister of education to discontinue the subventions and to limit the right of religious taxation owing to the economic depression. Baron Kohner was elected president of the Jewish community.
