Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations said here yesterday that the US has not “abandoned attempts” to promote proximity talks between Israel and Egypt for an interim agreement to reopen the Suez Canal. Addressing the 83rd annual convention of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Ambassador Yosef Tekoah said “I think the correct definition of the US attitude is that the door has not closed on the Suez and that is also our expectation.”
Tekoah conceded, however, that the chances for resumed Suez talks do not “appear very bright” nor did he see bright prospects “for peace in the immediate future.” The Israeli envoy predicted that Egypt might resume limited hostilities following the American Presidential elections next Nov. because President Anwar Sadat “faces many internal problems,” especially if there is a deadlock in peace negotiations.
Tekoah dismissed as “mere rumors” reports of Soviet moves to reestablish relations with Israel. He said the rumors were inspired by the Russians to improve their image.
The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service in NY said today that the deportation hearing for Mrs. Hermine Braunsteiner Ryan, a former concentration camp guard convicted in Austria in 1949 of brutality, has been postponed until “sometime in Aug.” because of the ill health of the government attorney, Vincent A. Schiano. The hearing began three months ago.
