Vandals attacked the Great Synagogue on Fieldgate St. in Stepney early today after a memorial service was held there for the II Israeli Olympic athletes. The vandals hurled bricks through the windows and tore out strip lighting. A spokesman for the synagogue told police investigating the vandalism that nothing of a sacred nature inside the building was damaged.
Police meanwhile posted guards at other synagogues in the London area where memorial services for the Munich victims were held. A spokesman for the Great Synagogue said, “I don’t know if it was connected with Munich but it is curious it should happen just after we held memorial services.” He added, “We have never had any trouble like this before.”
