In a speech reaffirming his assertedly pro-Axis address of June 11, President Getulio Vargas was reported in a New York Times dispatch from Rio de Janeiro today to have assailed “opportunists and war provocators who are without a country and ready to trade in any manner.”

Charging that his June 11 talk had been distorted by publication of isolated phrases, Vargas warned that “this discordant chorus would be used by foreign agents provocateurs who are paid to create friction.”

“It will not be hard to identify these elements, opportunists and war protestors who are without a country and ready to trade in any manner,” Vargas added, describing this “foreign element” as composed of “undesirables who entered Brazil surreptitiously and now abuse the hospitality of the country by mixing in national affairs.”
