The Vatican organ Osservatore Romano today bitterly decried anti-Christian efforts in Germany to stifle popular religious sentiment. “This work of religious persecution is still more dangerous because it can lead to error and prove more deceptive than atheism openly proclaimed and admitted,” the paper said. “It is only necessary to read the National Socialist press to realize the extent of the effort made during the last few days to denature the character of the Christmas celebration by substituting profane ideas for the Christian significance of this celebration.”
