The Venezuelan Government is restoring the 138-year-old Jewish cemetery at Coro as part of a project to preserve historical landmarks. The technical work will be supervised by the Minister of Public Works, Jose Curiel, a Jewish engineer whose ancestor, Jochedet Hanah Curiel, was one of the first persons buried in the cemetery. The Jewish community in Coro is descended from Jews who came there from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao in the early part of the 19th century. The cemetery was opened in 1832.
