Headed for an unknown destination, the steamer Mamara sailed from the Black Sea port of Mangalia today with 500 Jewish refugees from Germany on board. The ship, flying the Panamanian flag, was believed aiming to disembark the passengers somewhere on the African coast or in Palestine.
Meanwhile, the Greek steamer Aghios Nicolaos was prevented at the last minute from leaving the Black Sea port of Balcio with a cargo of 552 refugees. Among the refugees were 152 Jews who were said to have escaped from the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau and who had been waiting at Constanza for three months for a chance to leave this country. All were sent back to Constanza.
An estimated 1,300 refugees were said to be packed on three river boats between the ports of Tulcea and Sulina, awaiting permission to continue the trip down the Danube to the Black Sea. Most of the refugees were believed destined for Shanghai.
