Dr. Herz, Vice-Mayor of the Spandau suburb of Berlin, has been dismissed by a majority vote of the local Municipal Council. The President of the Council, in informing the Vice-Mayor of the decision, writes: “As a recognized and active solicitor in Altona before you took over this post, it will not be difficult for you to start your career as a solicitor again and thus provide for your family.”

The central organ of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, the “Vorwaerts”, writing on the subject of Dr. Herz’s dismissal, condemns it as a violation of the Constitution of the country.

“Councillor Dr. Herz”, it writes. “has obtained wide recognition as an expert in Municipal affairs. But he has two faults. He is a Jews and he is a Social Democrat. The most serious of the two faults, we suppose, is that he is a Jew. Of course, all other considerations are valueless against such a fault, and a man who is guilty of it must be got rid of.”
