The White House announced today that Vice President Richard M. Nixon’s trip to the Middle East has been postponed indefinitely. The President’s illness was given as the reason for the postponement. James C. Hagerty, Presidential press secretary, said it was decided that it was necessary for Mr. Nixon to be available to preside over the Cabinet and the National Security Council.
A personal report on developments in Cairo was given British Ambassador Sir Roger Makins today by George V. Allen, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Allen returned last week-end from a visit to Egypt where he sought to dissuade Egyptian Premier Nasser from going through with an Egyptian-Communist munitions deal.
